THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING
Cost-competitive, fully biodegradable and compostable packaging materials that are fossil-free and microplastic-free.
ABOUT THE PHACTORY
Creating a Better Alternative to Conventional Plastic
The PHActory is a research project from the University of Manchester’s Bioprocess Engineering Group, developing a new generation of sustainable packaging materials.
Using innovative fermentation technology, we aim to provide packaging manufacturers with a cost-competitive alternative to traditional fossil-based plastics – without contributing to long-term plastic and microplastic waste.

THE CHALLENGE
The Plastic Problem
Most conventional plastics are fossil-based and persist in the environment long after use. With recycling rates remaining low, plastic and microplastic waste continues to accumulate across our ecosystems.
